Comhairle na nÓg

Exchange House Ireland currently has young people on Comhairle na nÓg (Youth Councils) representing the Traveller community.

The aim is for young Travellers to take part in Government and Oireachtas issues and to represent Travellers at local and national level on Comhairle na nÓg. A further aim is to have young Travellers elected to Dáil na nÓg.

Comhairle na nÓg were established in 2002 by the 34 City and County Development Boards (CDBs) in each local authority area, as part of the National Children’s Strategy. Comhairle na nÓg provides a forum for young people to discuss local and national issues of relevance to their lives and communities. Delegates from Comhairle na nÓg are elected to represent their local area at the annual Dáil na nÓg.

Participating in Comhairle na nÓg facilitates young people to become more informed socially and politically, and to use these skills to enhance their own communities.
